The place, a simple, non pretentious bar with a great beer selection, out of this world pork shanks, and excellent bratwursts (try them with saurkraut or sautee onions)! Bartenders are very friendly, and you can try the beers before deciding!

Bartenders were very kind. Place was clean. Drinks were great. Food was good. We were pleased!

My husband and I stopped in here on a Sunday night just before 8pm. We heard the band playing in the outdoor section which drew us in. This is not a typical sit down restaurant. There's no table service, so you need to ask the bartender for a menu and place your order directly with him. You'll then get a number to place on your table so they can bring it out when it's ready. The menu basically consists of apps, a burger, and ten gazillion different flavors of brats (aside from the extensive beer offerings). We ordered a "3/4lb pretzel" with beer cheese sauce, and got the three-brats deal to share. We tried the beer brat, Applewood brat, and a chicken wing brat, which were all seriously good. They were served with a sour kraut bowl, and a host of condiments, sauces and mustards. We paid $.25 extra for a small cup of blue cheese and Carolina sweet heat BBQ sauce, which were also very good. Overall, we paid about $20+tip for a good meal, a ginormous pretzel, and two pints of local brew. We were happy with the food, the prices, the service, and the easy going crowd. We'll be back!

Brats brats brats galore! I had the gyro brat with all the fixings. DELICIOUS. This is your typical WI corner bar and that's what I love about it. Cheap drinks, cheap food and friendly service.

Live next to the bar and hear live music a few days of the week. Don't know many bars with outdoor patio and this place gives me a bigger-city feel. Great bar to socialize in. Many different kinds of people. Don't go here to 'make a prescience' as the atmosphere here is nonchalant and friendly. They have great taps to try. The inside has cool benches to socialize in. The only downfall is that the patio has to close at 10pm.

Friendly, chill atmosphere. Nice patio space with music sometimes. Good, cheap, greasy food. Rotating specials all week. Usually at least a few awesome beers on tap. Recently installed a rotating 3-whisky tap also.

My drink was hella sweet. My food was hella salty. Folks out here really just don't give a shit about their health do they? Waiters don't really care about their customers either -- my man asked for some sauerkraut and what he got was a naked brat on a burnt bun. When we brought it up to the guy -- he just goes "Oh yeah, you did ask for sauerkraut" and that was that. I had some pub nachos (something like that) that consisted of potato chips, cheese and chopped brats. I must admit, it was surprisingly good...although hella salty. Like I want you to think of the saltiest thing you could possibly taste and add more salt to it just to get an idea HOW salty this was. I ate the whole thing tho because I was starving. I was surprised to see that they charged $7.50 for one of the sorriest big pretzels I've ever seen. I ordered a margarita and I appreciate the guy taking the time to veer from pouring beer to take a stab at making something he's clearly never made before. I never leave a 1/2 drink at a bar but, I just couldn't finish it.. yikes, what the fuck did he put in that thing? This place is ideal for local college kids who love beer... but then I feel bad because all the salt in their food is going to ruin their palates for the rest of their lives. Clearly I'm not from here as I see hella 5-star reviews for this place from many locals. Listen, I don't like beer and I really just didn't get the appeal of this place. Sorry LaCrosse! :/

I really like this place and have been a somewhat regular as of late. You can get beer by the liter which I enjoy and they have a decent selection of beers at any given time. They recently upgraded their 'bier garten' outside and it looks great. The outside closes at 10pm though. They also have a cool game called hammerschlagen that you can play inside and outside. Two of their dart machines are completely worthless and the darts bounce out every time. FOOD: I hadn't eaten there yet and on our lunch break my wife and I went in to try their Friday deal of $2 brats. It took a while to get acknowledged by a staff member, but we had our orders in by 12:10. By 12:50 we began to panic as our food wasn't even at the table yet and we had to be back to work by 1pm. We asked to get them to go and they packaged them up in just enough time to get back to work (without eating). We got in the car and looked, they didn't give us any of the sour kraut or onions that we asked for, AND paid for. They also put a metal fork in with them, which was odd. I'd go again to eat on a weekend or something, but if you only have a lunch hour to eat, I would avoid the place. I will also still go regularly at night to drink though.

I love this place. Favorite pub downtown La Crosse. Supercrazygood pricing on an entire menu of flavored brats with kraut and grilled onions on toasted pumpernickel buns - along with a nice tap selection they have a MUSTARD bar to accompany the brats. Really nice atmosphere, will take you out of a sour mood or keep you in a great mood. Live music on occasion. Spread the word!

I have been in town for work alot over the last few months and have tried almost every place in downtown La Crosse. Loved this place. Great beer selection, great brats & mustard selection, and they always seem to have interesting/good music playing.

I've had 2 good experiences here in the past two weeks. They have 6 or 7 good German beers on tap and dozens of worldwide beers in bottles. Food menu is limited to huge soft pretzels with a large variety of mustards and 40, yep 40 different flavors of brats. If you are looking for a good place to have a good beer (served in authentic German barware) then definitely check it out. If you are looking for a full sit down authentic German dinner, then this won't do it for you. I'm a fan and will be back, often.

Before Stolpa's opened this place used to be a darkly painted rock bar. The new owner has done quite a bit of remodeling and brightened the place up. They have lots of great beer, most of it imported from Germany, and some great pretzels. If you're into mustard I think they had more than 10 varieties. I don't like mustard though so I politely declined.

Crazy good food. All of it will exceed your expectations. Many many variety of brats and the chicken sandwiches are perfectly cooked. Chicken tacos and spatzel are great too. I especially like my chicken sandwiches with the Bangkok dangerous sauce.

Went to Stein House tonight for their Friday fish tacos. Very busy bar atmosphere and very nice guys working hard. The fish tacos were absolutely yummy. Topped them off with the Rusak sauce. Even more delicious!! Can't wait until it's Friday again :)

The Stein House is primarily known as a place to get a reasonably priced, large stein of good beer and bratwurst. I believe the bar always has about 10 beers on tap with the specific beer varieties changing from time to time but always featuring some rare and excellent German offerings. They pride themselves on cleaning the tap lines more regularly than other places and the beer flavor suggests it makes a difference. Beer is sold in liter and 1/2 liter glass mugs. Food offerings include 40 different flavors of bratwurst with about 10 different varieties of mustard to slather on them and large soft German pretzels. While the rest of the menu is very limited, they have a "special" item every day to expand the usual fare. On a recent visit, I had fish tacos (mahi mahi) which was one of the special items. They were top notch and reasonably priced. All in all, The Stein House is a nice addition to the downtown La Crosse drink and food options and it is no surprise that it is steadily growing in popularity.

New ownership in July 2012 and the place is really worth a stop. Daily specials include mini mug Wednesday and $2 brats on Friday. There are around 40 different brats to choose from and this is the only place in town to get one outside of Octoberfest. About 10 rotating taps so get the beer you like because it might be gone when you return.

$3.5 for a liter beer and $2 brats..hmmm i think i found another gem in La Crosse. My co-worker recommended this place so I went to try it out! They have specials everyday of the week and such a good deal! the brat selection is awesome. I had the Parmesan and garlic and buffalo brats topped with sauerkraut. They were probably the most tasty brats I had. I had pearl street pale ale which is a locally brewed beer. yumminess..

Their toast is fucking amazing. I ate their toast once and woke up 10 hours later without my clothes on. 10/10 would eat their toast again.
